The City of Orangeburg is looking for a well-qualified individual to fill the position of Golf Course General Manager at Hillcrest Golf Course.

DESCRIPTION:

The Golf Course General Manager is responsible for the successful operation of all aspects of the Municipal golf course and its associated facilities. This position will work under the broad policy guidance and direction of the City Administrator with advisory recommendations from the Golf Commission with regard to facility capital improvements. The duties of this position require a variety of complex administrative, supervisory and professional work in maintenance and operation of a golf course and associated facilities. This position supervises the superintendent, golf course maintenance workers, Pro Shop staff and other part-time or temporary employees as assigned. Work Environment: 85% inside a climate controlled building; 15% outside which may include driving.
 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

The selected candidate must have good interpersonal skills to deal with employees, club members, golf professionals and members of the public using the course. The candidate should demonstrate proactive and creative techniques to develop programs to encourage memberships and increased play. The duties require excellent analytical and financial skills to develop and monitor budgets so that the facility operates as an efficient and self-sustaining course. The duties also require excellent marketing (including social media) and customer service skills to attract and retain members of private clubs or customers of public courses. The selected candidate must be familiar with the practical and financial aspects of managing golf course facilities, including pro shops, restaurants, clubhouse and the course itself.

JOB DUTIES:

Operations

  • Hire, train and manage full-time and part-time employees to run golf course operations, and oversee golf course superintendents who deal with the practical aspects of building, developing and maintaining the course;

  • Be responsible for greens keepers (to include licensed SC Pesticide Applicator personnel) and the employees who work in the shops or snack bar.

Marketing

  • Build membership and set the appropriate membership fee structure to cover operating costs;

  • Maximize the number of paying customers through customer attractions such as driving ranges or professional lessons;

  • Promote the facilities through advertising to include the use of social media;

  • Organize tournaments to attract visiting golfers and create public interest;

  • Create promotional material to attract and communicate with members, and develop plans to improve facilities for members;

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in golf course management, business administration, hotel and restaurant management, or the equivalent in a related field;

  • ‘Class A’ PGA Certification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience is desired;

  • Minimum 3 years successful experience in golf course management; successful management of a public entity-owned course is a plus.

  • The work requires occasional driving and possession of a valid SC Class D Driver’s License is required;

  • Possession of a valid SC Pesticide Applicator’s License is a plus.

Other:

  • Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require a mixture of sitting, standing and walking each day: sitting approximately three (3) hours per day, standing approximately three (3) hours per day, and walking approximately two (2) hours per day. The job requires frequent reaching and repetitive motions with the ability to move and position objects with one hand without the assistance of the other hand. The work requires occasional: grasping, pulling, pushing, light lifting/carrying of objects weighing 15 pounds or less, moderate lifting/carrying of objects weighing 15 to 44 pounds, and the ability to swing a golf club. Rarely, the work requires: bending/stooping, climbing, kneeling, and heavy lifting/carrying of objects weighing 45 pounds and over.

     

  • Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to understand what others are saying in normal conversation in person, on the telephone, and in meetings. Speaking: Ability to communicate orally with others in person, on the telephone, and while providing formal instruction to students. Seeing: Ability to see and read computer monitor screens, read fine print, and observe performance.

  • Office Machines: The work requires the ability to operate the following office machines: telephone, Fax, photocopier, printer, desktop and laptop computers, and calculator.

 

Hiring Salary Range: $48,000 - $55,000 Plus full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, paid holidays, state retirement, life insurance, short and long term disability insurance and more!
