The City of Orangeburg is looking for a qualified Clerk to assist in the Municipal Court Division. 
 
Essential Functions:
 
This individual will work with the public and therefore must be customer service focused. Clerk II is an entry/working level. Assignments at this level are performed within established guidelines. Incumbents are expected to perform routine duties within the unit assigned. A supervisor is typically available to resolve unusual or difficult problems.  Following direction and attention to detail is a must. Position is part-time – 20 hours/week.
 
Required Skills:
 
  • Knowledge of legal documents and court processes and the ability to apply rules and procedures pertaining to court actions is desirable.
  • Understand, explain, and apply office practices and procedures with the abilityto perform clerical work involving judgment and accuracy;
  • Strong grammar (spelling and usage), principles and practices of public relations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Cashiering using basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division);
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, including Public Safety personnel, attorneys, co-workers and the public;
  • Operate standard office machines and equipment such as computer terminal, printer, calculator, and copying equipment;
  • Type at a minimal rate of 45 wpm from clear copy;
  • Ability to use Microsoft office tools, i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook.
 
Examples of Duties:
  • Performs a wide variety of legal clerical support work requiring a thorough knowledge and understanding of court functions, policies and procedures within the area assigned; reviews documents, researches discrepancies and verifies information; develops calendars, schedules court dates and records dispositions;
  • Provides information to attorneys, litigants and the public regarding unit functions; regularly serves as liaison with other departments, outside law enforcement agencies and other concerned parties;
  • Develops and modifies forms; provides input on improved service delivery procedures;
  • Enters and retrieves data from on-line computer systems; reviews information and makes corrections; performs system testing and screen development work;
  • Prepares a variety of documents related to processing of small claims, civil, traffic, criminal, juvenile, probate, mental health, or family court such as writs, abstracts of judgments, orders of executions, minute orders, summons, and subpoenas;
  • Accepts payments for bail, fines and fees; issues receipts;
  • Prepares and processes arrest warrants;
  • Additional duties as assigned.
 
Required Education or Experience:
  • HS Diploma (or equivalent) and one (1) year experience performing clerical duties in a legal or court setting with the ability to apply rules and procedures pertaining to court actions or;
  • HS Diploma (or equivalent) and one (1) year of work experience which required the use of customer service skills likely to produce the required knowledge and abilities in order to work well under pressure and exercise good judgment, tact, and initiative in stressful situations or;
  • Associates degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a course of study related to the knowledge, skills and abilities for the classification, e.g., English, Communications, Criminal Justice, etc.
 
Physical Requirements:
 
  • Ability to get in and out of vehicles.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time while operating office and other equipment;
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, squat, and crouch to pick up or move objects, office equipment and records including lifting up to 30lbs.
 
Other Job Requirements:
 
  • Valid South Carolina Driver’s License and;
  • Satisfactory results from pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check upon conditional offer of employment.
     
Pay range: $9.00 - $11.00 per hour based on qualifications and experience.
