Fire Engineer I
The City of Orangeburg is seeking individuals to fill vacancies as Fire Engineers with the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety.
General Purpose
Performs general fire department duties for the protection of life and property within the department’s fire service district. Duties includes, but are not limited to, driving and operating various fire apparatus, fire suppression, fire cause determination, fire-ground traffic regulation, fire prevention and public fire education activities. Duties are diverse and discretionary and require judgment in the broad application of policies and procedures.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of a Public Safety Officer III (Corporal).
Essential Job Duties
-
Respond to fires and other emergency situations to protect and save life and property;

Operate fire apparatus, perform fire suppression duties, and extrication;
-
Prepare incident reports;
-
Participate in training exercises and continuing education classes as assigned;
-
Present public education and awareness programs regarding fire prevention;
-
Perform various station duties and maintenance as required;
-
Assist with annual certification testing of equipment; and
-
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
-
Must be 18 years of age or older;
-
Possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license;
-
Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent;
-
Ability to meet the requirements of the SC Fire Academy;
-
Must provide a recent Credit Report;
-
Must pass a criminal background check and driver's license record check;
-
Must be able to successfully complete medical examination and drug screening;
-
Must be able to successfully complete psychological and polygraph examinations;
-
Must be able to successfully complete physical and written assessments; and
-
Good Moral Character.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-
Some knowledge of modern fire suppression principals, procedures, techniques and equipment;
-
Some skill in operating a wide variety of tools and equipment;
-
Ability to learn and effectively apply the ordinances department rules and regulations;
-
Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition;
-
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors;
-
Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in make decisions with limited supervision or guidance; ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
-
Ability to learn fire district’s geography; ability to perform strenuous or peak physical efforts during emergency or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme height, intense heat, cold or smoke; ability to meet the special requirement listed below
Special Requirements

Must possess a valid State Driver’s License without record of suspension or revocation in any state;

Ability to meet department’s physical fitness standard;
Preferred Qualifications
Currently certified IFSTA Firefighter II.

This exam is 155 questions over a 2.5 hour time frame. It is broken into 2 parts with an 105 question cognitive exam and a 50 question integrity exam. The exam does require a 70 overall with a required minimum of 75 of the integrity to pass. The test and study guide material are solely owned by IO Solutions. Any cost associated with study material is the responsibility of the applicant.
Starting Pay:
$30,275 with full benefits package to include employer paid medical, dental, vision insurance, long-term disability, state retirement contribution, and more.
Schedule
24/48 hour rotating schedule
Conditional offer of employment based upon satisfactory results from criminal background check, pre-employment physical, and drug screen.
