MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I, PUBLIC WORKS 

                          Valid Commercial Driver's License Required!
                          $20.00 hourly

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work in the collection of solid wastes using a variety of motorized equipment and trucks.  Equipment in this classification includes sanitation trucks with specialized functions related to residential and commercial sanitation where driving and maneuvering the vehicle constitutes the majority of the work required.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Essential Functions When Assigned to Operate Sanitation Truck:

Drives a garbage pickup truck to gather garbage from residential and commercial areas of the city. Picks up, carries and dumps garbage into the truck when not driving to perform garbage pickup function.

Carries pack-out and makes handicap stops to pick up garbage from the homes of residents who are handicapped. Maintains records on miles driven and bags used to maintain information for administrative purposes. Notifies supervisor of problems encountered on streets and alleyways to resolve garbage pickup problems.

Performs minor maintenance duties on garbage pickup trucks such as gassing and checking oil to ensure the operational readiness of vehicles. Loads truck with tools and equipment necessary to accomplish the garbage pickup function.

Performs Depending on Location:

Acts as the spotter directing drivers to specific areas for dumping the contents of their trucks to ensure efficiency of operations. Performs minor maintenance duties on garbage pickup trucks such as gassing and checking oil to ensure the operational readiness of vehicles.

Hand loads small piles of brush on to front-end loader to assist the brush pick up crew. Operates Roto-boom or front-end loader to pick up brush in the absence of rotor boom operator.

Maintains records on miles driven and bags used to maintain information for administrative purposes. Trims bushes and trees on alleyways, and repairs ruts and holes to maintain them safe for the public and sanitation trucks.

Operates a winch, dump truck or rear-end loader or a low-bed truck when collecting recycling materials such as glass and aluminum to efficiently collect such items under City's Recycling Program.

Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day: performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes changing oil, refueling, and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; and secures vehicle after use.              

Provides coverage during special events and activities as needed; responds to emergency and disaster situations as needed; provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed; and performs other related duties as required.

Follows established safety procedures: utilizes safety equipment and wears protective gear: monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; monitors traffic conditions surrounding trucks and equipment to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project and work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations..

Communicates with supervisor, other employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Additional Functions:

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of work experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA Compliance:

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (25-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, or rude/irate customers.
