The City of Orangeburg is looking for a well-qualified individual to fill the position of Shop Manager.


DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Public Works Director, performs routine, supervisory, technical, and administrative work in the planning, organizing, directing, and supervising of the Garage Division of the Public Works Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of the Automotive Mechanics, Supply Specialist, and other assigned staff.

Assist mechanics in the troubleshooting of equipment and advise accordingly.

Evaluates the status of equipment and creates work orders for needed repairs or replacement.

Estimate repair cost and assist the Supply Specialist in ordering of the parts for the repair.

Develops shop procedures and budget data for the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and mechanical equipment.

Plans and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all City vehicle equipment.

Assist in the preparation of bid specifications and perform setup for new vehicles and equipment purchases.

Administer the Division’s budget in conformance with adopted policies and procedures.

Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of vehicles and equipment.

Provide end of the month billing to the appropriate departments.

Coordinate safety training, monitors compliance with OSHA, State DOL, and City rules and regulations.

Provide emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles and equipment.

Works during snow and ice operations, as well as, any other emergency situations.

Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

High School Diploma or GED.


Minimum of seven (7) years of experience that is directly related to the area of employment.


Any equivalent combination of education and experience.


A valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, valves, generators, welding, price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment.

Considerable knowledge of computers for vehicle and equipment maintenance.


Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.


Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures; ability to establish and maintain vehicle and equipment records and/or reports generated by computer programs; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, department heads, vendors and the public.

Physical Requirements:

 

The essential functions of the job require a mixture of sitting, standing and walking each day; use of hands, and fingers to feel, or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. Duties may occasionally require to sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; talk or hear and smell.

 

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and will occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary Range: $49,000 - $56,000 with full benefits package including employer-paid medical, dental, vision, State Retirement, 401k, 457b, health clinic and more.

Conditional offer of employment based upon satisfactory results from pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
