                             Grade 5
 

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to perform basic maintenance and repair of City-owned equipment.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Assembles, maintains and repairs machinery and vehicles to ensure functionality and reliability of machines, engines and mechanical systems with great attention to detail. Must be able to work with various machines and tools as well as follow all safety precautions.

Build and assemble machines or mechanical components according to requirements.

Inspect machines, engines, transmissions etc. and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues and conducts repairs aiming for maximum reliability.

Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner and perform thorough maintenance on machinery, equipment and systems.

Cleans and applies lubricants to machinery components and replenishes fluids and components of engines and machinery.

Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to machine or vehicle users.

Undertake other duties as assigned (e.g. repair of hydraulic systems, painting vehicles etc.)

Keep logs of work and report on issues.

Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Operates or uses various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; and operates and maintains basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets.

Communicates with supervisor, other employees, vendors, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Completes all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

Additional Functions:

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by vocational or technical training in auto mechanics or a related field; supplemented by zero (0) to one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuild equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications. Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of the same equipment, machinery, and/or objects.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information, such as electrical, hydraulic and mechanical diagrams, work orders, and maintenance and repair records.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

ADA Compliance:

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, and bright/dim lights.
